It Has What In It????!!!!

If you go to the grocery store and start looking at deodorants, what do you expect to find as the main ingredients?

Do you expect to see a fragrance?  A wonderful synthetic fragrance that contains alcohol and who knows what else all those weird scientific words are!  That one I do expect in  most deodorants; however, I only wear ones that contain a natural scent normally from essential oils.

I can tell you one thing I did not expect to find.  As I was reading the label on a deodorant labeled "natural mineral" I was shocked and greatly dismayed to find ANHYDROUS as the second active ingredient.  Yeap you read that correctly anhydrous!  AHHHH!  Really women are putting that on their armpits?  Wow!

I can't tell you how horrible that made me feel.  They were labeling this product as natural and a mineral deodorant that is better for you, and yet here on the label is a deadly chemical!

Now what is normally the first active ingredient in most store deodorants?  Come on what do you think?  It's aluminum.  Yeap great old aluminum.  Did you know that some time ago they linked aluminum to Alzheimer's?  Studies show an increased amount of aluminum in the brain of victims of Alzheimer's via autopsy.  Aluminum is also thought to increase your breast cancer rates.

So tell me again why we as women constantly put that stuff on our arm pits?  Truly?  Okay so yeah I don't.  I use only deodorants that do not contain fake chemicals or harmful ingredients.  These normally have oils(coconut mainly) with beeswax and some essential oils.  I have some deodorant that is a baking soda base with peppermint oils that works wonderfully for when I'm going to be very active and sweating.

My deodorant ingredient list.  This is so much better than  aluminum being #1.
I'm not going to do name drops here on deodorants that I use.  You'll see some that I use in reviews I'm sure in the future as I'm working on getting some.  However, I'm also not putting out names of the name brands I refuse to use!  And yes I do refuse to use them.  I was given some the other day and they went in the trash.  I don't even pass them on.  It's all about what's important to us and what we choose to do about it.

Okay off my soapbox for now.  Enjoy your day and maybe please take the time to read the labels on your favorite deodorant and also don't forget about body care products(that's a whole nother post waiting to happen).

  1. I guess I should check my deodorants!

  2. Unfortunately most people probably don't even look at the labels or educate them as to what is harmful. Many other cultures don't even use deodorant, gasp!

  3. I am aware of aluminum but other than that I don't even know what ANHYDROUS is! I use natural deodorants and most of the time I can pronounce what is in it, so I am not worried! Thanks for the info!

  4. Thanks for opening my eyes about deodorants and their ingredients. I am going to look at what I see on my deodorant and see about changing this because this is so important!

  5. I know it is so scary when you read the ingredients! Aluminum is so bad for your body! I had a terrible reaction from aluminum. I even needed surgery to remove many of my glands. Aluminum is serious stuff!

  7. I've been off deodorants except in extreme cases for about a year - now I'm off them for good! Learned today you can make your own clean, safe deodorant. As an aside, once I stopped the chemical filled bath products and got on clean ones, I got DAILY compliments from my hubby on how good I smell. Yay!

    1. All of my skin/bath stuff is natural chemical free. But I unfortunately tend to not even like my own stink these days with being pregnant and running after 8 littles all day so I still use deodorant just very picky about brands and ingredients.

  11. I can not believe you found Anhydrous in some deodorant! Just thinking about a chemical used in fields that is meant to kill off weeds/bugs ect.. Yuck! then a story comes to mind where some poor guy drove through a cloud of some anhydrous that was just put on a field (wind blew it over a road)... Ugh!

  12. Yep, conventional deodorant is pretty disgusting! I'm using one from Monkey Baby Naturals right now - It's patchouli-based, which is a pretty strong scent, but I like it! I switched from the toxic stuff for good during my last pregnancy -- I especially hated the idea of a little newborn head snuggled up in my toxin armpit. :/

  13. How bad is it that I know the dangers and yet still use the "dove" ones because I have never found a natural one that works well for me. Though it has been a while since I looked for new ones.... so please do drop names!

  16. I've got to admit it - I haven't spent much time checking my deodorant. I'm probably putting something nasty on my body... now I have to go check. Thank you for sharing this. Glad to have you link-up with Wellness Wednesday :)
