Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies

I have been wanting some chocolate brownies lately but didn't want to have to pay the prize for a box mix for a small pan of gluten free brownies.  I think I've come up with a pretty good recipe!

I took a recipe for an 8 by 8 pan of brownies and multiplied it by 3 to make an 11 by 15 pan of brownies.  I took it out during the last 10 minutes of baking and sprinkled a package of mini chocolate chips on top.  Yum yum and yum!  Oh and if you can have dairy(or if you like coconut ice cream)  top this with some ice cream and chocolate syrup.  Oh I think I may have to go eat another one!

For dairy free make changes in the brackets!

Ingredients:
2-1/4 cup gluten free flour mix(here is a recipe for the one I use)
1-1/2 tsp baking powder
1-1/2 tsp salt
6(1 oz) squares unsweetened chocolate {use 6 oz's of Enjoy Life chunks of your favorite dairy free chocolate}
1 cup butter {use 1 cup coconut oil}
2 cups honey
6 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease an 11 by 15 inch baking pan.

Place the butter and baking chocolate squares into a saucepan on low on the stovetop.  Melt these until it is all melted.

Yummy chocolate and butter melting.
Once the butter and chocolate are melted add in the honey stirring well.

To this add the eggs.  Mix well.

In a medium size mixing bowl mix together the dry ingredients.  Place the wet ingredients into a well in the middle and mix well.

Place into the baking pan and bake for 30 minutes.

All mixed up and ready for the oven.
At the 30 minute time take out of the oven and top with your favorite baking chips.  I used the Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips.  Bake for another 10 minutes.

Ready to dig in!!
Remove from the oven and then allow it to cool.  Serve alone or topped with ice cream.

Now as a special surprise I bring to you from Good Cook a flash giveaway (48 hours) for a 13 by 9 nonstick cake pan!  The pan is currently on sale for $10.28.  How awesome!  Oh and another great surprise!  I get to offer you a coupon code for 25% off!  Simply enter in cakepan at checkout!

Make sure to check out other great recipes from bloggers who are also giving away cake pans below the rafflecopter!

Make sure to enter on the rafflecopter below.  I am not responsible for shipping this prize but will be choosing the winner at the end of the giveaway.  You will have 48 hours to respond back to me with your address before a new winner is chosen!  Winner must reside in the United States.

Spatty Review and Giveaway- The Pitch List ends 5-4

 photo lunapic_136664552192955_11.gif

I am one of those people that absolutely hates to waste anything.  I hate to waste the last bit of spaghetti sauce in a jar or those last precious drops of ketchup.  Believe me, the way my kids eat ketchup that stuff is gold!

spatty and spatty daddy
The original size Spatty and the Spatty Daddy!
Now I have the perfect solution!  I recently got the chance to review The Spatty.  The Spatty comes in two sizes.  A larger longer size and a smaller size. I find myself using the larger size quite often but not so much on the smaller size.  I think this is probably due to the fact that we buy most everything in bulk so all of our containers are large!  With 8 kids that's the only way to go!

Spatty and Spatty Daddy
You can see the difference in the two sizes here.
The website also states that you can use it for makeup and lotion, personal care type items, but so far mine has not made it out of the kitchen.  I might start using the smaller sized one for that since it doesn't get used much in my kitchen.  It is the perfect size to stick into a bottle of lotion or shampoo.

Like what you're seeing with The Spatty?  You are in luck and can enter to win one of 10 sets being given away as well!  Just enter on the rafflecopter form below.  I am not responsible for shipping this prize or for choosing the winners.

When the Morning Glory Blooms by Cynthis Ruchti -Review CFBA

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
When The Morning Glory Blooms
Abingdon Press (April 1, 2013)
by
Cynthia Ruchti

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Cynthia writes stories of hope that glows in the dark, merging her love for storytelling with inextinguishable hope for inexpressible hurts.

Cynthia spends her days diving into words, worship, and wonder and celebrating 40 years of marriage, three grown children, and five outrageously adorable grandchildren. One of her greatest joys is helping other writers grow in their craft. To that end, she served as the assistant director and a faculty member of the Quad Cities Christian Writers Conference, has served as worship and devotions staff for the Write-to-Publish conference, and teaches at other conferences as opportunities arise. She speaks to women’s groups, at mother-daughter banquets, and for women’s refresher days and retreats. It is her delight to serve on her church’s worship team. Rather than “busy,” she likes the term “active.”

For 33 years, Cynthia wrote and produced the radio broadcast The Heartbeat of the Home. The scripted radio drama/devotional broadcast aired on as many as 50 radio stations and two cable/digital television stations over the years. Cynthia was the editor of the ministry’s Backyard Friends magazine, a twenty-page, twice annual publication that reached 5,000 homes, churches, and parachurch outreaches.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Becky rocks a baby that rocked her world. Sixty years earlier, with her fiancé Drew in the middle of the Korean Conflict, Ivy throws herself into her work at a nursing home to keep her sanity and provide for the child Drew doesn't know is coming. Ivy cares for Anna, an elderly patient who taxes Ivy's listening ear until the day she suspects Anna's tall tales are not the ramblings of dementia. They're fragments of Anna's disjointed memories of a remarkable life. Finding a faint thread of hope she can't resist tugging, Ivy records Anna's memoir, scribbling furiously after hours to keep up with the woman's emotion-packed, grace-hemmed stories. Is Ivy's answer buried in Anna's past? Becky, Ivy, Anna--three women fight a tangled vine of deception in search of the blossoming simplicity of truth.

If you would like to read the first chapter of When The Morning Glory Blooms, go HERE.

My thoughts:  I love that the main subject in this book is that of the unwed mother.  You see this a lot nowadays and it is becoming more acceptable, but in times gone by this wasn't always the case.  Anna is one character that I immediately fell in love with.  I love that era of history and love what she does to help other women who happen to be mostly young unwed mothers.  Then you fast forward to Ivy who is a young unwed mother in the Vietnam time frame who takes care of Anna and who gets cared for in turn by Anna.  And last but not least you get Becky who became a grandmother too soon.  I loved this book.  I highly recommend that everyone read it and understand.

A Healing Heart by Angela Breidenbach -Review CFBA

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Healing Heart
Abingdon Press (April 1, 2013)
by
Angela Breidenbach

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Angela Breidenbach is a speaker/coach in mental and physical health, author of A Healing Heart April 2013 from Abingdon Press in the Quilts of Love series, Gems of Wisdom: For a Treasure-filled Life, Creative Cooking for Simple Elegance, and Creative Cooking for Colitis. Other works by Angela include compilation books and devotionals from Guidepost, Group, and articles in magazines, ezines, and newspapers. She is certified in mentor/peer counseling as a CTA life coach, as a Stephen Minister, and a weight loss/nutrition coach. Angela serves as an assisting minister (worship/prayer leader) for her congregation in Missoula, MT. Not only did she walk the hard line of deciding to donate her mom’s brain for the study of schizophrenia, but she’s also on the brain donation list at the Brain Bank-Harvard McLean Hospital.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Mara Keegan is an uber-successful mother and a widow of three years. She's been chasing success and all the "good things in life" for her family to make up for the cruel whim God played on them by taking her husband. In an effort to be the perfect mom, she decides to make a photo memory quilt, a graduation present for her daughter, Cadence.

She’s not yet finished when she experiences a heart attack. While Mara recuperates, she revisits the choices she's made that led to this physically and spiritually broken heart. The memory quilt must be finished in time for Cadence's big day, but Mara struggles with her burgeoning feelings for the man who must keep Mara's business going during her recovery, Joel Ryan. Can Joel find his way into Mara's heart and onto Cadence's quilt?

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Healing Heart, go HERE

My thoughts:  I immediately fell in love with the stubborn Mara and her family.  I loved how descriptive the book was and once again am really in love with this series, Quilts of Love.  I love to quilt(when I have time) and can relate to their love to be creative this way.   I like that we learn that Joel and Mara have a past, a not so nice past actually.  Will Mara set aside everything she thinks of Joel to let him help her?  Will she fully get over her heart attack and her broken heart?  I really think you'll like this book and suggest you check it out and learn the answers for yourself!

For Him and My Family is excited to join Adventures of 8 and Blog with Mom in a new Advertise with Bloggers Event!
One lucky reader will WIN a Keurig from our friends at Massdrop, the newest way to buy online and save money!
Massdrop-Logo
Let me tell you a bit about Massdrop and how you can use this new site to save you MONEY!!! This is unlike any site I have seen before, as it works off of 'group buys' to offer the lowest price and YOU can vote for items you would like to have brought to Massdrop!

_W3T4341

Here is how it works - let's say you have always wanted a Keurig B60 Single-Cup Home-Brewing System, but didn't want to pay the high department store price, nor did you want to purchase a refurbished one. What you would do is VOTE to bring the Keurig B60 Single-Cup Home-Brewing System to Massdrop, then once the poll option gets at least 200 votes, they negotiate bulk pricing with the supplier and pass them on to the Massdrop community.
GettingYouTheDrop
This is where it gets really cool; THE MORE PEOPLE THAT PURCHASE the product, the lower the price!!!
JoinTheMassdrop
Basically, the sale goes on for seven days, it starts at a certain price and as more people purchase the item the lower the price goes, with up to 3 price drops unlocking until the lowest price available is offered... and in the end you will only be billed for the lowest price; cool, right? The funny thing is that when the community worked together for their first Keurig B60 group-buy, they cleared out all of North American inventory in just a few days.
Oh and a really neat thing is that if you don't see a product that you want, as a community member, you can create a product poll for anything from coffee makers cards to homebrew beer kits.
Go sign up for Massdrop now to see how awesome this site is, then come enter to win a BRAND NEW Keurig B60 Single-Cup Home-Brewing System!

Knowledge Quest Sacagawea Review #hsreview TOS Crew

 photo 61867_10151551915578243_1408297526_n_zpsc18fa83b.png

In our house reading and knowledge go together.  I would rather my children not read the book if it's not going to teach them something!  This is why I was excited for our family to be able to review Sacagawea ebook by Knowledge Quest.  Yes even the name of the company seems to go along with our philosophy of knowledge!  The best part of this ebook  that we were about to read was the fact that it contained links to help us learn!

A bit more about Knowledge Quest includes that it is the labor of love of a homeschooling family with 6 children who in 2001 began their business.  They were tired of not being able to find what they needed for teaching their children.  There were good products out there but nothing that covered all that they wanted it to.  At first they just made black and white maps for children to color and label as they were studying history(these sound great to me!).  They have now expanded into numerous books as well as apps for electronic devices and now even a class to teach parents how to homeschool!  I for one am glad that this busy family had the time to undertake this adventure.

 photo SacagaweaBook_zps004a015c.jpg

Now onto our thoughts on reading the ebook about Sacagawea.  We don't have electronic devices that can "read" things in our house.  We're not that high tech yet I guess.  But we do have computers and this ebook could easily be read in PDF version off our computer.  This book(or series of books) is part of a greater set available through Knowledge Quest called Brave Explorers Every Child Should Know.

This book consists of four parts or sagas or even call them small books if you want to.  Whatever you call them, they're all worth reading.  We of course read them in order because that's just the way we are!

Sacagawea is directed to children ages 10 and up.  The complete ebook(all four sagas) is now available on Amazon for $3.99 according to their Knowledge Quest website!  This is quite the deal.  It includes all four sagas titled in order from first to last:  Stolen, Passage, Survival, and Equal.  This is a great read aloud book for the family at only 112 pages or it would also make a great book for your child to read and report on when they were in the 4th grade or older area.  My oldest is only 8 but loved to have the book read to her!  We all of course crowded close to the computer to click on the links and see where they would take us to learn more about our history.

We started off by talking a bit about Lewis and Clark and their journey before we read this book.  We happen to live in Northwest MO and part of their trail is within minutes of us.  We drove along the trail as we talked about the journey they took.  I introduced them to the fact that there was a woman who helped to guide them and then we went home to read the book!  We read the first part, Stolen! and then took off a few hours to talk about it and draw some pictures to show what she went though.  Next came part 2, then 3, then 4, well we finished the entire book in two days!

It kept my kids attention really well which is a great thing for a book to do with 8 kids ages 2-8.  They were intrigued with her story and kept wanting to know what would happen next!  I love when my children are excited about school and really want to know what we are learning.  The great part is that this book helped them to learn and also to retain it!  We were talking about Lewis and Clark the other day and they were telling me all they remembered about Sacagawea.  They remembered all the key points which made me a proud mama and glad that we had been able to use this ebook.

A group of reviewers from our Crew Review Team were able to review both Sacagawea and the Timeline Builder App so make sure to hop on over to the Main Crew Blog Post to read these other reviews and find out what they thought about this book and the other App.

Josiah's Treasure by Nancy Herriman -Review CFBA

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Josiah's Treasure
Worthy Publishing (April 16, 2013)
by
Nancy Herriman

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Nancy Herriman abandoned a career in Engineering to chase around two small children and take up the pen. She has been writing for longer than she would like to admit. Her work has been a finalist in several Romance Writers of America contests and she won the 2006 RWA Daphne du Maurier award for Best Unpublished Mystery/Romantic Suspense. In 2009, she was an ACFW Genesis finalist. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Romance Writers of America.

When she is not writing, or gabbing over lattes about writing, she is either watching history shows on cable TV or singing. She lives in the Midwest with her husband and sons, and wishes there were more hours in the day.

ABOUT THE BOOK

In 1882, Sarah Whittier dreams of opening an art studio run by immigrant women. She plans to use the house left to her by family friend Josiah Cady as collateral for her studio. But will all be lost when the inheritance is challenged by an angry man claiming to be Josiah's son and legal heir? Rumor of gold nuggets hidden in the house, place Sarah's life in danger. Her future uncertain and her safety threatened, Sarah has nowhere to turn. That is, unless she can soften a vengeful man's heart-and they both learn that love is finer than any gold.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Josiah's Treasure, go HERE.

My thoughts:  This book was another that totally held my attention.  Josiah comes searching for vengeance but will he take it out on Sarah?  This is a very well written book containing quite a bit of history on the area. Sarah's dream of helping the less privileged immigrant women and girls to stay off the streets is wonderful but will she be hurt for her help?  I think you should really read this book!

Salem Ridge Press -For Merrie England Review

Salem Ridge Press Logo photo salemridgelogo_zpsf36e1a99.gif

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I love to read.  I read to my kids quite a bit as well.  We have lots of read aloud time as part of our school day and silent reading for them as well.  I am extremely glad that we've found Salem Ridge Press whose mission is to provide(bring back) quality children's books from the 1800's and early 1900's.  These are wholesome books.  These are books worth reading and books that will teach your children!  Yes I'm a bit excited!

We were allowed to review For Merrie England, A Tale of the Weavers of Norfolk by Emma Leslie.  The book is available for purchase at $10.95 for a softcover and $20.95 for a hardcover.  We received the softcover version of the book to review.  This great little book is geared towards children ages 8 on up to adults.  My oldest is only 8 so I read this book to my children.

For Merrie England photo sr-formerrieengland_zpsb28f3ee3.jpg

Our setting is England in the year 1357.  We follow a weaver on a journey to gather new apprentices and teach them his trade(by order of the king no less).  He meets many along his journey but the best of these is the least of these.  Does that sound confusing?  It won't if you read the book!  But I can give you a hint.  This boy is named Tom.  He is small for his age and crippled. Now as a sister to two boys who were born with cerebral palsy, I'm not a lover of the word crippled, but it was one of the nicer words for people of this time period.  There were many reasons for someone to be "crippled" in this time and age, ranging from malnutrition to disease to birth defect.

Tom's family includes an older brother who the weaver is actually supposed to be apprenticing.  Older brother(perfect son Robert) decides to run off to go fight in the 100 years war.  The parents are very worried and upset about this but also worried that now they do not have a son to send to apprentice now that Robert has run off and they are in dire need of money.  The weaver sees Tom's eagerness to learn and how intelligent he is and takes him along instead.

When Robert comes back from the war his mother is dead, his father blames this on Robert running off.  Robert is no longer welcome at home so he goes to join Tom apprenticing with the weaver.  Robert goes on to share his story of his war years and conversion to Christianity and also apprentice several people himself.  Tom realizes his true worth as well.  My children loved this book and are looking forward to reading more.

The book is a good length at 133 pages.  Very easy for an older child to read on their own and not taxing for a parent to read to their children in a few sittings.  I love that at the bottom of the pages this book includes definitions for words that our children might not know.  For example on page 53 at the bottom below the last paragraph we find the word bestirred with a definition of roused.  Now your children if little may not know what that word is either and that brings out a wonderful time to get the dictionary and look it up!

Throughout the book(scattered sparingly) are charming black and white illustrations.  The illustrations are done by R. Taylor and are wonderful even after all this time!  The book was originally written in 1890 and published by The Religious Tract Society.  I have a love of old books and this fit right in!  We have several books from the 1860 era that we take with us when we reenact the Civil War and I'm going to have to be checking to see if Salem Ridge Press has any that were originally published around then.  But I just have to share an illustration on here.  I love the illustrations in older books!

I love the detail in these illustrations!

If you are interested in learning about other books offered by Salem Ridge Press please feel free to head over to the main Crew blog post and check out the reviews by other members.  Several books were available for Crew members to choose from so there is a variety to check out and decide which is best for you and your children to start out with.  You can also see more by Emma Leslie in her Junior Church History Set of which For Merrie England is one.

ABeCeDarian Company Review -TOS CREW #hsreview

 photo abecedarianlogo_zps0ce11eae.jpg

I have always loved to read.  I think it comes naturally to me.  My children like to read but would rather I read to them than have to read the book themselves.  While this is probably natural for children I was excited for them when we received a package from ABeCeDarian Company to review.  In our package we received their level A-1 teacher and student workbooks, A-2 teacher and student workbooks, B-1 teacher and student workbooks, a set of 10 storybooks for children to read aloud(these correspond with the level A workbooks), and a collection of 11 Aesop fables.  The Aesop fables are geared to go with the B level workbook and only include the sounds/words that the children can already sound out/read.

photo of our review materials
This is the great packet we received to review.
We primarily used the level B-1 with the set of 10 storybooks and the Aesop's Fables.  The entire program is geared towards a Kindergarten through early 2nd grade readers.  I used it primarily with my first grader who thought she couldn't read because she still had to sound out the words.  After finishing the program I have to say(with lots of excitement) that she now tells people that she CAN read!  Yeah!  She still has to sound things out at times, but she is much more confident of herself and no longer gives up as easily over words that she does not know!

Level B-1 includes a teacher's book which can be purchased for $25.50 as well as the student book which is available for purchase for $10.25.  If you order over a certain number(50) the price drops on the student books to $1.50 per book.  This would be a great deal if you planned to use it in a school setting or with a homeschool group/coop.

In some situations, you can get by without buying the teachers books to go with the student books.  I feel that you do need the teacher book for this program  It would just not work the same way if you only had the student book.   There is so much extra in the Teacher book to help you as well as your student that I think it is definitely worth the cost.

The set of ten storybooks costs $21.50.  They are sold as being part of the Level A program, but you also will be using them in the B level.  If your child tests at a point that they should start at the B level like my daughter did then you should still purchase the storybooks as they are needed.  In the teachers manual it will have your child reading these stories.  If you do not have them it says to skip that part, but I think the extra reading materials are beneficial.

The Aesop's Fables was a favorite of all my children.  They enjoyed hearing either their sister or me reading the stories to them.  The cost for the set of eleven fables in one book is $2.50.  This book of fables has been adapted to only contain sounds/letters that your student should be able to read at that level.  They are the same great stories, but at your child's level.

I am very pleased with what ABeCeDarian has been able to do for us reading wise and am looking forward to seeing what others have to say about it as well.

Since we didn't use the two lower levels this time(I probably will use them this fall with my now kindergarteners) I really am not going to discuss them.  If you want to learn more about those levels and what they were like or what reviewers thought of them please make sure to visit the main Crew blog post.  Lots of great reviews are available for you there.

A Journey Through Learning -Review

Journey through Learning Logo photo journeythroughlearninglogo_zps21c38856.jpg

I received an e-version(download) from  A Journey Through Learning to review.  In the download were three lapbooks and a unit study.  We received lapbooks about Earth, Knights and Castles, Letters numbers and shapes, as well as a unit study on astronomy and space!

When I told the kids what we were going to be doing they were so excited!  They did have a bit of an attitude when I told them they were only going to do one of them to start out with.  My silly children seemed to think that they should be able to do all 4 of these at once!  I of course did not think that this was a good idea considering they wouldn't be learning as much doing it that way.

We decided to try out the Earth lapbook first as my kids have asked lots of questions lately and we just finished up a nature study.  The Earth lapbook is geared towards grades 1-4.  I have two in first grade, two in kindergarten, and two in preschool as well as two toddlers so I wasn't sure that all of them were going to understand, but we did well.

The instant download of The Earth lapbook is $13.00.  If you were looking for it in print it is $21.00.  This lapbook requires two manila file folders to complete.  The download/print is 42 pages long.  I at first thought that this was a short amount of pages for all that it said it was going to cover.  In the description you see that it says you'll learn about the layers of the Earth, how the Earth moves, different types of rock, volcanoes, landforms, mountains, the seasons, the atmosphere, and more!  That is a lot of information!  But it was well covered in the pages of the download.

My kids were thrilled with the concept of lapbooking.  We had never tried it before.  I had only just recently heard about lapbooks and wasn't sure it was something that we would enjoy doing or something that I would want to do with all of my kiddos(I thought it would be a lot more work than it was).  I did have to do more work on some of the younger ones lapbooks as they are not quite as good with scissors and glue as they should be(they're not even at 1st grade level and this is a 1-4 grade level).

We started out slowing and only worked on our lapbooks three out of our five school days the first week.  My kids were not happy with this and wanted to work on them daily so we started doing that.  As I mentioned before, my oldest boy and girl(in first grade and some second grade) did really well and really seemed to understand and comprehend what they were learning.  A lot of it was over the heads of my kindergarten and preschoolers, but they still got the concept of getting to cut and glue which is really fun when you're a kid!

We have totally finished our Earth lapbooks.  It took us a little over a month to get done with this lapbook.  My kids were so excited and told their homeschool friends at our meeting about all the fun they were having. I was surprised at the number of moms who were already utilizing lapbooks.  I also love the fact that A Journey Through Learning offers so many different lapbooks.  You can get lapbooks for Veggie Tales and lapbooks to correlate with well known curriculums.  My kids are already assuring me that we are going to do the remaining two lapbooks over the summer(even the preschool one) and probably the unit study too.  They're not quite so sure they'll like that one.  They are also already asking to see what other lapbooks we can do!  I think I might have to invest in some other subjects to use  for this summer while I recuperate from having a baby and still try to get school done.

To learn more about the other two lapbooks and unit study please visit the Main Crew Blog Post.  I have an ulterior motive in referring you there as I am the one that got the privilege of writing it up this time!  Yeap tooting my horn a bit.  Also you should check out the other reviews by crew members.  We each got to choose which lapbook or unit study to review so I'm sure you'll see a good variety!
