Walk With Me

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Walk with Me
River North; New Edition edition (September 1, 2012)
by
Annie Wald

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Along with being the author of Walk With Me (forthcoming September 2012, River North/Moody), my fiction has been published in numerous journals including Image, The Southern Review and The North American Review and included in the anthology series, Not Safe But Good, edited by Bret Lott and published by Thomas Nelson. I’m also the author of a young adult novel, The Counterfeit Collection (Tyndale) and I’ve written feature articles for many publications such as Guideposts, Leadership, and Partnership.
Before writing full-time, I worked in book publishing as an acquisitions editor and then as Editor-in-Chief at Princeton University Press. Since 2000, I’ve lived in Morocco where my husband is the pastor of Rabat International Church. We have two married daughters and four delightful grandchildren.

A Word from Annie:

If you still want to know more about me, you may be interested to learn:
On the Myers-Briggs scale, I’m not an I for introvert. I’m an H for hermit.
But I’ve been known to say, “We’re having a small gathering; only 10 people.”
I love Easter sunrise services in cemeteries.
I live on the west coast — of Africa.
My favorite Moroccan meal: Zahara’s beef couscous with raisin sauce, and tchouchouka.
J’adore le francais.
I once told God I’d marry anyone except the man who became my husband.
I prefer to make things up rather than do research, although I have been described as an ‘infomaniac’.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Peter and Celeste choose to travel as one on the lifelong journey to the King's City
. They are blissfully in love and bound to each other by the Cords of Commitment.
Shortly after visiting the Moon of Honey they discover that the journey proves
much more difficult than they expected. When they find themselves laboring
through the Swamp of Selfishness, crossing the dismal Plains of Distance, and
nearly becoming separated by the River of Unfaithfulness, their love for each
other and for the King is challenged. They must choose whether to continue on
together, not knowing if they can be warmed again by the Kindling of Affection,
or visit the Valley of Cut Cords to journey alone once more.

Malibu Blonde Natural Wellness Treatment

First let me share that I was a bit skeptical of this product at first.  I have naturally blonde hair with some brown and strawberry blonde highlights.  I've always laughed at my hair and called it a calico hair because it has so many different colors that are natural.  But it lacks shine at times.  See below for a description of the Malibu Blonde Treatment that I tried out.

Malibu Blondes Treatment - A patented, fresh-dried vitamin complex that dissolves into a gel in the palms of the hands forming a rich lathering treatment specifically formulated for blonde and highlighted hair to be used, at home or when traveling to brighten and increase shine/ vibrancy while helping to prevent damage from environmental elements in the air and water.
Malibu Blondes Treatment:
  • Immediately brightens blonde and highlighted hair
  • Removes & prevents hard water mineral build-up that can dull blonde & highlighted hair
  • Immediately restores vibrant color and radiant shine
  • Improves flow and movement of hair
  • Prevents dry-feeling hair.
  • Immediately freshens look of blonde or highlighted hair
  • Improves hair texture
  • Formulated with a patented, nature-identical Vitamin C Complex
  • Food-grade, wellness ingredients
  • Preservative-Free, Fragrance-Free, Sulfate-Free
  • Packaged for easy travel
  • Eco-friendly ingredients in recyclable packaging.
Malibu Blondes Treatment is for all ages and hair types with natural or chemically-treated blonde or highlighted hair. For best results, pour Malibu Blondes Treatment crystals into wet palm, then rub wet palms together to form a rich gel that when applied to hair turns to a lathering treatment. May be used daily, weekly or as often as desired. For more lathering results, shampoo and rinse prior to application. Each packet is .17oz.

So, now you know all about the wonderful little package.  I was shocked by how small the packet was, but once you add water it really is a lot of product.  I think if I had realized I would have only used half the first time and had a second use out of it.

Anyway, I used it in my hair and was amazed at how vibrant, shiny and life like my hair was.  Personally I think it rivalled some of the celebrity hair.  We have well water here that is very hard and I think it is also very hard on my hair.  This made my hair feel light and airy.  I didnt' feel like there was any residue left over from the water or shampoo on my hair.

I highly recommend you try this out if you have dull blonde hair.

Picture Collage Maker Review

An example of a collage calender from their website
I recently was given the pleasure of trying out a photo picture collage maker.  This is a great program that allows you to do so many different things!  Not only can you make a collage, but you can do a calender(see above), greeting cards, scrapbook pages, and other artworks.  The possibilities of what you can make using this program are limitless!

Here is a short description from their website, "Picture Collage Maker is a powerful and easy-to-use program for creating photo collages and keepsakes on Mac and Windows. It allows people to make delightful keepsakes that they can freely share with families and friends. Some of the highlighted features included:
1. With 100+ various templatesprovided to make digital photo collages, scrapbook, greeting cards, posters, photo album for any occasion.
2. Support drag and drop photos onto collage. It comes with a large collection of beautiful picture frames and masks that you can add to any of your photos.
3. Personalize your creation by adding clip-art, text, and setting background. It allows you to resize, rotate and position all the elements to make collage crafting intuitive and interesting.
4. Save collage as an image file; set as desktop wallpaper; share through Email, or print it out instantly
."

This is a great program to use to make those Christmas cards to send out to family.  I personally am thinking that our long distance family will be getting calenders this year.  Whoops guess I just spoiled that surprise too!  Oh well, it'll still be a surprise what the Christmas letter says and what pictures we use!

Packaway Packing Boxes Review

I store lots of things in tubs in our basement storage room.  I also use under bed tubs to store things beneath the kids beds so that we can try to be less clutterfilled(is this a real word) in our household.  It's a bit of an addiction.  That is why I was so excited to review these packaway packing boxes.  They contain a spot where you can actually write on them.  If you use a dry erase marker you can even wipe it away and change when you change contents.  How neat!  Much easier than using stickers and sharpies like I have been doing with tubs.

Here is a product description from the company themselves, "Packaways is a brand new Storage Box that ships and stores in the flat position. When needed, simply press on opposing corners and the bottom "Automatically" folds into place and locks. When not in use, simply press on the bottom and the box folds back down flat for easy, out of the way storage. Ideal for homes, apartments or living quarters where use is intermitent and space is tight. Many applications: Moving; Back To School; Organizing The Kids' Rooms; Basement or Garage; Seasonal Items, etc. You can color code your things or have the colors match your decor. Proudly made in the U.S.A. from durable corrugated plastic. Great for harsh storage conditions or long-term storage since moisture and humidity won't effect the integrety of the boxes. Will last hundreds of cycles under normal circumstances. Many, many useful applications. "

They are super easy to use and my kids have already decided that they need them to help store their stuffed animals in.  We received two boxes.  One pink and one green.  The green box now contains their stuffed animals while the pink now contains their dress up clothes.  It has greatly helped arrange and organize our toy room instead of just having everything in their large toybox.

You can find out more about these great boxes by going to their website and facebook pages.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. Pin It Now!

Two Destinies -Review

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Two Destinies
David C. Cook (September 1, 2012)
by
Elizabeth Musser

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Elizabeth Musser, author of acclaimed novels such as The Swan House, grew up in Georgia, but now lives in Lyon, France, where she and her husband serve as missionaries with International Teams. Look for Two Testaments, her sequel to Two Crosses, in stores now, and Two Destinies, the third book in the trilogy, set for release in Fall 2012.

A word from Elizabeth:
Recent exciting news is that, finally, the whole trilogy is going to be published in 2012. Many readers have written to me throughout the years to encourage me to keep pursuing getting Two Destinies into print. In a fun twist of fate (really the Lord's perfect timing), David C. Cook (who originally published Two Testaments) has offered me a contract for all three novels. The Secrets of the Cross Trilogy will be published in June 2012 (Two Crosses and Two Testaments) and in September, 2012, Two Destinies will be in the bookstores for the first time!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Now 1994, France faces unrest and rising poverty while neighbor
Algeria is in the midst of a blood civil war. Risléne Namani, a French
woman born to Algerian parents, converts to Christianity and falls in
love with Eric Hoffmann, a Christian, committing the unpardonable
sin in the eyes of her Muslim family. Eric must find a way to rescue
her—from a forced marriage in Algeria, or even death.

A powerful, relevant tale of social struggle, heartache, cultural conflict,
and faith put to the ultimate test.

If you would like to read the first chapter excerpt of Two Destinies, go HERE.

My thoughts:  This book isn't the type that I normally read.  It's just not what reaches out and grabs me.  I am so glad that I chose to review this book though!  It was deep and moving and really made me question things and ask myself what I would do if I was that character!  Huge kuddos to the author and a must read!

I received a copy of this for free to read as part of the CFBA. However, all opinions in this post are mine and not influenced by others. I was not compensated in anyway for this review other than a copy of the book. Pin It Now!

Tru Chocolate Review and Giveaway -The Pitch List

So, I recently tried out a new chocolate.  Yes, as many of you know I am a chocoholic.  I love chocolate but more specifically dark chocolate.

Tru Chocolate features organic dark chocolate that is gluten free, vegan, all natural, antioxidant rich and with no artifical preservatives.  But there is even more good news!  It is made entirely in the USA!!  In their own words they "aim to produce and distribute the world's healthiest chocolate made with the purest all natural ingredients and beneficial to every human being on the planet."

Reseable bag holding the goodies.

Nice little package.

Circle of yummy goodness.
They did melt a bit in my mailbox, but a quick refrigeration worked wonders for them.
They were not harmed in the taste department at all!

These chocolates have a unique taste.  I can't quite describe it.  You have the dark chocolate pure taste plus a little something extra. A little zip, a little zing, and a whole lot of good for you goodness!   I did have a slight after tingle effect that let me know I had eaten them.  I'm thinking that is due to all the good for yous that they are promoting.

You can find these great chocolates on their website, facebook, and twitter!

These were very good.  I hid them from my children.  I grudgingly shared them with my husband.  But now I want to share some with you!  Use the rafflecopter below to enter to win some of your own to try!  The prize is 100 pieces of Tru Chocolate for you, retailed at $109.99!  Sounds good to me!

My Review

These are one of the coolest products I've had the pleasure of reviewing. Since I've started my blog I've been reading some great blogs on being more healthy and going green for the planet. The Glass Dharma straws are really nice. I'm not sure what the obsession is but my boys love to use straws. They use them once and throw them away though so we go through a lot of them. These glass straws are cute, affordable, reusable and best of all practically unbreakable. Unbreakable is a big deal for us with boys that are 4 and 7. My boys also love the decorative dots on the straws. No fighting, one gets one color and the other gets the other color. Easy peasy!. I've had a few friends and family come to visit over the past week or so and they've all asked about and been enamored with these straws. I think this is one of the coolest "green" products I've come across and I tell everyone about them! We will be buying more of these in the near future =] A BIG 5/5 from everyone here!

Glass Dharma is going to give 1 winner a $25 Gift Code to their website!

Still Life in Shadows -Review

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Still Life in Shadows
River North; New Edition edition (August 1, 2012)
by
Alice Wisler

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Alice was born in Osaka, Japan in the sixties. Her parents were Presbyterian career missionaries. As a young child, Alice loved to walk down to the local stationer's store to buy notebooks, pencils and scented erasers. In her room, she created stories. The desire to be a published famous author has never left her. Well, two out of three isn't bad. She's the author of Rain Song, How Sweet It Is, Hatteras Girl and A Wedding Invitation (all published by Bethany House).

Alice went to Eastern Mennonite University after graduating from Canadian Academy, an international high school in Kobe, Japan. She majored in social work and has worked across the U.S. in that field. She taught ESL (English as a Second Language) in Japan and at a refugee camp in the Philippines. She also studied Spanish at a language institute in San Jose, Costa Rica.

She has four children--Rachel, Daniel, Benjamin and Elizabeth. Daniel died on 2/2/97 from cancer treatments at the age of four. Since then, Alice founded Daniel's House Publications in her son's memory. This organization reaches out to others who have also lost a child to death. In 2000 and 2003, Alice compiled recipes and memories of children across the world to publish two memorial cookbooks, Slices of Sunlight and Down the Cereal Aisle.

ABOUT THE BOOK

It's been fifteen years since Gideon Miller ran away from his Amish community in Carlisle, Pennsylvania as a boy of fifteen. Gideon arrives in the Smoky Mountains town of Twin Branches and settles in at the local auto mechanic's garage. He meets a host of interesting characters -the most recent acquaintances are Kiki, an autistic teen, and her sister Mari. Known as the "Getaway Savior" he helps other Amish boys and girls relocate to life in modern America.

One day the phone rings. On the other end is his brother Moriah calling from Florida. Of course Gideon welcomes his brother to stay with him and offers him a job. But Moriah is caught in a web which ends in his death and forces Gideon to return to the town of his youth, with his brother's body in the back of a hearse and Mari and Kiki at his side. He must face not only the community he ran away from years ago but also his own web of bitterness. Will he be able to give his anger over to God and forgive his father?

If you would like to read the first chapter excerpt of Still Life in Shadows, go HERE.

My thoughts:  This book made me think.  I did enjoy reading it, but came away sad.  Sad for the number of people who left the only life they knew to start over.  Sad for the losses Gideon had.  Still LIfe in Shadows is well written and will keep you reading to the last word.  But, it is also a book that will challenge you to think.  To think about what you believe in and why.  To think about what you want to do with your life.  I recommend this book!

I received a copy of this for free to read as part of the CFBA. However, all opinions in this post are mine and not influenced by others. I was not compensated in anyway for this review other than a copy of the book. Pin It Now!

Come Explore with Us!!

Daddy is gone to a reenactment this weekend and today was my Azure Coop day so we spent a good chunk of the day grocery shopping and picking up our coop order.  That meant a long van ride to the "city" and a long van ride back plus the shopping.  Needless to say my kids don't find that especially thrilling so I thought I'd find something fun for us to do!

We went for a nature walk that ended in us having a cook out over an open fire!  Kids loved it!  We used it as a science lesson as well.  We talked about the different plants and trees we saw.  I taught them how to recognize poison ivy.  Walnuts were found and we discussed what they can be used for.  The kids learned first hand about the dyes that they make!

I must say the biggest success of the evening was the looks of awe on their faces when I started the fire with only small twigs and one match.  To watch their faces while the fire grew made me realize all over again what a joy children are and what a  precious gift from God.  I love my babies.  I love watching them learn and grow.  Somedays we just have to stop and smell the roses. . . or walnuts as it might be!

Here are some pictures of our evening.  Hope you enjoy looking at these as much as we enjoyed our evening!

And we're off.  Bridgett carried the backpack.
Fionna got to ride in the carrier on my back and Audry volunteered to hold Zyera's hand!

Loved the sun shining through the trees.

Gathering wood to start the fire.

I just love the green of the grass and her hat!

My one match, no paper fire!

Is it just me or does he look a bit ornery here?
Showing off our butterfly!

I had to share this one of Lucas too.
Oh and that is our dog Stonewall in the background.
He always goes hiking with  us.

The pile of walnuts.

More walnuts for the pile, and yes in his shirt. . . .

Love Bridgett's face!
Fionna was putting a walnut on the pile and knocked it all over!

The outhouse Daddy built for us when we moved here so we'd have a potty where we go for cookouts.

What a gorgeous first day of autumn view!

A Heartbeat Away

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Heartbeat Away
David C. Cook (September 1, 2012)
by
Harry Kraus

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A Word from Harry:

I started writing my first novel during my last year of surgery training at UK. I was a chief resident, and started writing Stainless Steal Hearts in a call room at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Lexington. It was a crazy time to write! I had a very demanding schedule, often spending days and nights in the hospital. I had two sons at that time, and I recognized the wisdom in my wife's urging: "Now doesn't seem the right time for this dream."

My experience as a writer is far from typical. Having received my formal training in biology and chemistry and medicine, my only preparation for a writing career was a love for reading. The longest thing I'd written before my first novel was a term paper in undergraduate school. My first novel was accepted by Crossway Books and published in 1994, and it wasn't until after I had FOUR published novels that I even opened a book of instruction about the craft of writing fiction. This is not what I recommend to others! Yes, I was successful, but I was bending the "rules" without knowing it. I had a natural talent for plotting, but I realize my initial success may have stunted my growth as a writer. I'd have made faster progress if I'd have gone to the fiction teachers sooner.

I have three sons: Joel, Evan, and Samuel. Look closely in all of my books and you'll see them there. My lovely wife, Kris, provides the basic composition for all those beautiful, athletic, dedicated women in my novels.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When a brilliant surgeon undergoes a heart transplant, her life transforms as she begins experiencing memories of a murder she never witnessed.

The residents worship her. Nurses step out of her way. Her colleagues respect and sometimes even fear her. But surgeon Tori Taylor never expected to end up on this side of the operating table.

Now she has a new heart. This life that was formerly controlled and predictable is now chaotic. Dr. Taylor had famously protected herself from love or commitment, but her walls are beginning to crumble.

And strangest of all, memories surface that will take her on a journey out of the operating room and into a murder investigation.

Where there once was a heart of stone, there is a heart of flesh. And there is no going back.

Kids Email Review and Giveaway -The Pitch List

I recently tried out a neat little email system for kids.  I really enjoyed browsing around and working with the parental controls to know that I can control what  my child does and does not see, even in their emails.

My kids aren't old enough yet to have computers or use email, but I think this is a great tool for those that have children who want to email their friends and family.  You can choose who goes on the safe list.  If they get an email from someone not on their safe list they can't see it until you approve it.  You, as the parent, get copies of every email they send and receive.

Some information about their email system that I found interesting and wanted to share:
  • Allow child to only receive and send emails from those in their contact list
  • Email a copy of incoming and outgoing messages to the parent
  • Remove images within emails
  • Remove links within emails
  • Only allow specific attachment types such as: images, pictures, video, mp3s, zip, pdf, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
  • Allow a parent to approve or deny any email sent to your children via the mail queue
  • Filter out offensive words found in incoming emails
  • Spam filtering
  • Kids can modify the look and feel of their account by choosing from several fun templates
  • A simple mode for young children as well as an advance mode for slightly older kids

I believe this is a great opportunity for you to try this out as well which is why in conjunction with the Pitch List I am offering up this wonderful giveaway for one year of free service and a $75 gift card to Amazon!  Use the rafflecopter below to enter.  Make sure to share away as well!

Picky Bars Review

Picky Bars were created by a trio of people, a husband and wife and the wife's best friend.  They are hard core athletes and needed energy throughout the day in a yummy form.  With one a Celiac and one having lactose and gluten intolerances it also meant they had to find something that wouldn't make them sick.  Being that these things were few and far between they came up with Picky Bars!   I have something else to share!  These are all made in the USA!  These guys are also packaged in 100% recycled papers.

All in Almond:  This had a crunchy almost crisp taste to it.  It was a moist bar, don't get me wrong, but there seemed to be more of a crisp inside than just the almonds which I would attribute to the agave.  I really liked this one.  It was not too sweet, just sweet enough to curb my sweet tooth and give me plenty of energy for the day!

The Need for Seed:  I loved the seeds in this one!  Yum.  Great breakfast and energy for the mom on the go.  I did not taste the chocolate in it(mores the pity) but I did love the seeds and the crisp it had.

Lauren's Mega Nuts:  Peanut butter at it's best.  Okay, so I love peanut butter and can eat it by the spoonful so it's no surprise that I really liked this picky bar as well.

Smooth Caffeinator:  Saved the best for last!  I am in such love with this bar.  Chocolate and coffee, umm yes please please please!!!  I had been eating these for breakfast and this one not only gave me energy, it woke me up!  I loved it.  Definitely my favorite.  I can't really say I tasted too much of the hazelnut, but that's okay because I'm not a big hazelnut fan.

Unending Devotion -Review

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Unending Devotion
Bethany House Publishers (September 1, 2012)
by
Jody Hedlund

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jody has written novels for the last 20 years (with a hiatus when her children were young). After many years of writing and honing her skills, she finally garnered national attention with her double final in the Genesis Contest, a fiction-writing contest for unpublished writers through ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers).

Her first published book, The Preacher’s Bride (2010 Bethany House Publishers), became a best seller and has won multiple awards.

Her second book, The Doctor’s Lady, released in September of 2011, and her third book, Unending Devotion, is out now. She’s currently busy researching and writing another book!

Jody has been married for twenty years to her college sweetheart. Jody has five children ranging in ages from 15 to 6, with a set of twin daughters in the mix to make things more lively.

ABOUT THE BOOK

High-Stakes Drama Meets High-Tension Romance

In 1883 Michigan, Lily Young is on a mission to save her lost sister, or die trying. Heedless of the danger, her searches of logging camps lead her to Harrison and into the sights of Connell McCormick, a man doing his best to add to the hard-earned fortunes of his lumber baron father.

Posing during the day as a photographer's assistant, Lily can't understand why any God-fearing citizen would allow evil to persist and why men like Connell McCormick turn a blind eye to the crime rampant in the town. But Connell is boss-man of three of his father's lumber camps in the area, and like most of the other men, he's interested in clearing the pine and earning a profit. He figures as long as he's living an upright life, that's what matters.

Lily challenges everything he thought he knew, and together they work not only to save her sister but to put an end to the corruption that's dominated Harrison for so long.

My thoughts:  I was captivated by this book!  I did not want to put the book down and found myself guessing(sometimes wrongly) on what was going to happen next.  I fell totally in love with all of the characters and am ready to see what they do and where they go next in life!  You should read this book.  Follow Lily on her journey and meet all the fascinating people that she gets to know.  Make sure you watch our for her father figure.  He's a bit protective!

I received a copy of this for free to read as part of the CFBA. However, all opinions in this post are mine and not influenced by others. I was not compensated in anyway for this review other than a copy of the book. Pin It Now!
